(aka "The Shuttle") Autronic SMC Installation Details - Wiring |
Distributor Wiring and Modification. The stock Toyota 3S-GTE distributor utilizes three reluctors, and two wheels, one above the other. Just under the rotor is a 24-tooth wheel which fires reluctor NE every 30 degrees of crank rotation. As the image below indicates, this 24-tooth wheel is modified through the removal of 20 teeth with a file or a Dremel tool. The other wheel contains a single tooth but is difficult to see because it's nestled beneath the 24-tooth wheel. This single-tooth wheel fires the remaining two reluctors, G1 and G2, once every 360 degrees of crank rotation. Installation of the Autronic SMC requires the use of reluctors NE and G1, while G2 remains unused.
Since the SMC lacks reluctor inputs, a reluctor to hall-effect signal conditioner is required. Make sure you tell the Autronic distributor you're installing the SMC on a Toyota All-Trac or MR2 and he will ensure you receive the requisite part. Essentially, this signal conditioner converts the reluctor's spike-oriented outputs to hall-effect square-wave signals. Electrically, this part sits between the distributor and the SMC.
The signal conditioner has three pigtails, two inputs and one output. Each of the input pigtails contain two wires, red and black, and a silver shield. These connect to the distributor. The output pigtail consists of four wires, yellow, green, black, and red. These wires connect to the SMC. One of these pigtails is tagged to represent "Ref Trigger input".

24-tooth Wheel Mod. The non-US spec Autronic SMC EMS requires the removal of 20 of of the 24 teeth on the reluctor. My recommendation to you is to buy a US-spec SMC and forego this distributor modification. Essentially, every 6th tooth is kept and all others are removed. This mod leaves the reluctor wheel with only four teeth. It is easily accomplished through the use of either a flat bastard file or a Dremel. I didn't own a Dremel tool at the time when the Autronic was installed. So, I give many thanks to Tyler for his tireless patience in filing off the unnecessary teeth from the reluctor. I currently lack an image indicating which teeth require removal, but I will take a picture and post it soon. In the meantime, email me if you need this in a hurry.
