Chris' '90 Toyota Celica
All-Trac Turbo
(aka "The
Shuttle") Stereo System |
Updated: September 25, 2017 |
Issue: a 3" exhaust that's nothing but LOUD; a BOV that's louder-than-I-prefer, and a giant sucking sound of the turbo pulling air through the K&N filter
Solution: a really kick-arse stereo for some good clean tunes.
Components - While The Shuttle came from the factory with Toyota's premier "System 10" stereo system, which truly is an awesome-sounding system, for numerous reasons, I've replaced the factory components with what I believe is a good mix of aftermarket components. I have yet to add a CD changers, but that's a low priority.
Head Unit: Alpine CDA-7863 CD Changer: None, yet (low priority) |
Main Amp: JL Audio 300/4 Front Speakers: Boston Acoustics RC41: Rear Speakers: Boston Acoustics RC61: |
Sub Amp: JL Audio 250/1 Sub-woofers: JL Audio 8W1 (qty - 2) |
Installation - Speakers are installed into the factory locations. And, in case you're wondering, yes, I had to do surgery on the black plastic to fit the JL 8" subs in the doors; and, yes, the windows do go all the way down without any issues. Both JL Audio amps are mounted on the back-side of the rear seats as seen in the photos. As shipped from Toyota, the back-sides of the rear seats are constructed from this paper-like particle board that is covered with carpet. And, since this paper-like particle board material is so very flimsy, I reinforced the seat-back with sheets of 20 ga steel, that are cut to fit, and fit under the metal seat frame at the top of the seat. These steel sheets provide the necessary reinforcement to prevent the flimsy seat-backs from disintegrating that would otherwise occur as a result of hard launches and tight cornering. Thankfully, nothing in the hatch area, battery and amps included, can be seen from outside the vehicle with the parcel shelf in-place and the hatch closed.
